The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that begins in the lower back, travels through the buttock, down the back of the leg and into the foot, providing nerve supply the skin and muscles along the way. Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve is irritated by a lumbar disc bulge, lower back stiffness or muscles tension. Sciatica is a term often misused for general back pain.

Common symptoms of sciatica
Sciatica symptoms are experienced from the lower back and down the leg as opposed to being localised to the lower back only. Symptoms may include:
- Shooting pain in the lower back, buttock, leg and foot
- Pins and needles and/or numbness down the leg
- Weakness in the leg
How is sciatica treated?
Your physio will complete a thorough assessment to determine the factors contributing to your symptoms.
Treatment may include:
- Advice on positions and postures to avoid
- Gentle exercise to improve your back and leg mobility and strength
- Hands-on treatment to reduce associated muscle tension
- Hot packs
- Speaking with your doctor about appropriate pain medication if required
