Clinical Exercise at Hartwell Physiotherapy is individualised, physiotherapist-led rehabilitation exercise designed around your body, your injury history and what you want to get back to doing.
It can be particularly helpful if you:
- Have ongoing or recurring neck or back pain
- Are recovering from an injury
- Feel stiff, weak or less confident with movement
- Want to return to exercise but aren’t sure where to start
- Want to improve your strength, mobility and general fitness
- Would like more guidance than you would receive in a standard group exercise class
Every program is designed specifically for you and progressed as you improve.
For many people, getting their pain under control is only the first step.
Building strength and gradually returning to regular exercise can help you move more comfortably, increase what your body can tolerate and give you more confidence in everyday activities.
Depending on your individual goals, your program may help you:
- Reduce pain and stiffness
- Improve mobility and flexibility
- Build strength
- Improve balance and control
- Feel more confident bending, lifting and exercising
- Return to work, sport, hobbies and everyday activities
- Reduce the impact of future flare-ups
- Maintain your strength and mobility over the longer term
Your physiotherapist will tailor your program to what you need rather than following a set routine.
Our Clinical Exercise sessions combine Pilates-based rehabilitation with individualised strengthening and mobility exercises.
Unlike many group Pilates classes where everyone completes the same program, each person in our Clinical Exercise classes works through their own physiotherapist-designed exercise program.
Classes have a maximum of six people, allowing your physiotherapist to supervise your technique, modify exercises when needed and progress your program as you improve.
Exercises may include:
- Pilates reformer exercises
- Mat-based exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Mobility and flexibility work
- Balance and coordination exercises
This makes Clinical Exercise a good option for people who want the benefits of regular exercise but would feel more comfortable doing it with the guidance of a physiotherapist.
If you’ve had neck or back pain before, you may find that your pain improves but you still don’t feel quite back to normal.
You might feel stiff, avoid certain movements, feel weaker than you used to, or worry that exercise could aggravate your symptoms.
An individualised exercise program can help you gradually rebuild strength, mobility and confidence rather than avoiding movement because of your pain.
Your physiotherapist can adjust your exercises to suit your symptoms and progressively increase the challenge as your body becomes stronger and more capable.

Clinical Exercise classes run for 50 minutes with a maximum of six people and are supervised by a physiotherapist.
Although you exercise alongside other people, you won’t all be completing the same workout.
You’ll follow your own program, with your physiotherapist available to:
- Check your technique
- Modify exercises if something isn’t comfortable
- Progress your exercises
- Adjust your program as your goals change
Our sessions use a combination of reformer and mat-based exercise, along with other rehabilitation and strengthening equipment.
Clinical Exercise sessions may be claimable through private health insurance if you have appropriate Physiotherapy Extras cover.
