GLA:D, or Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark, is a six week education and exercise program developed by researchers for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms. It reflects the latest evidence in osteoarthritis (OA) research and is conducted by a GLA:D certified Physiotherapist. GLA:D® Australia is a not for profit initiative led by La Trobe University.

What does the GLA:D program consists of?
- Baseline appointment explaining the program and collecting baseline data on your current functional ability.
- Two education sessions which teach you about OA, how the GLA:D Australia exercises improve joint stability, and how to retain this improved joint stability outside of the program. See Education Session timetable HERE.
- A one-on one GLA:D session with your Physio so that you feel comfortable with your exercises and the equipment.
- 12 group neuromuscular training sessions attended twice a week for six weeks to improve muscle control of the joint which leads to reduction in symptoms and improved quality of life.
- A review at 3-months with your physiotherapist to discuss progress and goals,and re-measure your functional ability
- Completion of a questionnaire on registration with the program, and then again at 3 and 12 months after registration to measure changes in areas such as pain, function, quality of life,and medication use.
Why should I try GLA:D?
In Australia, hip and knee OA treatment usually focuses on surgery. The GLA:D program offers a safe alternative that may avoid the need for surgery.
Research from the GLA:D program in Denmark has found:

What are my payment options?
GLA:D packages are available to pre-purchase. GLA:D sessions are claimable through your Private Health Insurance if you have Physio extras cover. You don’t need a referral from you Doctor, however you may be eligible for a rebate from Medicare for some of the cost of the program if deemed appropriate by your GP.
What do I wear?
Wear something that is comfortable and easy to move in. Remember to bring along a towel and drink bottle.
