Pain on the side of your hip (lateral) can commonly be caused by gluteal (buttock) tendinosis or trochanteric bursitis. The pain may also radiate from the side of the hip down the side of the thigh.

Generally a combination of things lead to lateral hip pain:
- Progressing your training load to quickly
- ‘Hanging’ out on your hip
- Woman are affected more than men due to wider hip morphology
- Lack of hip strength
- Tight hip muscles
- Sitting crossed legged
How are gluteal tendinopathy and bursitis treated?
Your physio may recommend hands-on treatment to relieve muscle tension and will you prescribe some exercise to work on your hip muscle strength and flexibility.
In order to avoid aggravating your hip pain, your physio will advise that you avoid certain movements to reduce compression on the side of the hip.
