Knee Injury Physiotherapy Treatment Melbourne - Hartwell Physio

Our knees pull a lot of weight that we take for granted until we suffer a knee injury. Knee injuries can affect your mobility, strength, balance, and much more. And while we often consider injuries a part of living, the right preventive measure can keep your knees and joints functioning optimally, irrespective of your activities and interests.

At Hartwell Physio, we focus on effectively treating your knee injury with the help of a skilled team and tailored rehabilitation plans, and run assessments to prevent further injuries.

Common Injuries Affecting the Knee Treated at Hartwell Physio

We treat a number of knee injuries with knee physiotherapy and knee pain rehab at Hartwell Physio. Some of these injuries include:

● Dislocated Knee

This is a painful condition that occurs when a bone in the knee keeps moving out of its normal position. It can restrict knee movement and may need therapy or physio for knee pain.

● Meniscus Tears

The meniscus, acting as a shock absorber, is a cartilage in your knee that often sees tears if there is sudden movement like while twisting the upper leg. This injury is more common among athletes and can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, or locked knees unless properly treated.

● Knee Fracture

Knee fractures are a common occurrence among people who engage in sports. Our knee specialist physio in Melbourne can both treat knee fractures and share measures to prevent injuries.

● Patellar Dislocation

The patellar is as much in danger of dislocation where the patella or kneecap laterally shifts out of its groove. Our physios treat the condition by sliding the patella back in place following an assessment.

● Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tear

A tissue at the knee that connects the thigh and shin, the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL suffers injury in case of excessive pressure. This condition is more common among athletes or active individuals.

● Baker's Cysts

A baker’s cyst occurs when there is fluid build-up behind the knee. This can lead to tightness in the knee and lead to discomfort. Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause of the build-up, physiotherapy, and draining of the fluid.

● Runner’s Knee

Runner’s knee is a common condition prevalent among sports players and worsens with continued walking, running, kneeling, etc. While the initial pain may feel dull, overusing the knee can lead to immense pain, which may require physiotherapy for knee pain.

SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY

Have you suffered an injury?

With over 40 years of collective experience in treating sporting injuries, our team at Hartwell Physiotherapy are well equipped to help you recover from your injury and return you to the field or court in the shortest and safest time possible. This is why we are trusted as the leading sports injury physio in the Camberwell and Glen Iris area. We have AFL physio experience, as well as managing elite level basketball, netball, hockey, cricket and running athletes.

Do I need scans?

The first step in your recovery is an accurate diagnosis of the structures you have injured, and the severity of that damage. Your physiotherapist will go through the specifics of the incident with you and then perform a range of physical tests to determine exactly which tissues have been damaged, and to what extent. In some cases (but not all), an x-ray, ultrasound or MRI scan may be required to further assess the damage. If this is the case, your physiotherapist will provide you with a referral to go and have the appropriate scan. If you have damaged something severely enough to require surgery, we have a network of specialist orthopaedic surgeons we can refer you to depending on your needs.

Can I do anything prior to my appointment to start the recovery process?

YES! How you manage your injury in the first 48 hours can have a critical influence on how long you might be out for. Compression, Rest, Ice & Elevation are the keys – you can read more about how exactly to do these things effectively HERE

Will I receive a rehabilitation program from my physio?

YES! Given the stress most sports place on our tissues, you will need to prepare them for your return to the field or court. Your physio will guide you through the appropriate exercises you will need to complete in order to regain full movement, strength & control of that region of your body. They will also modify your training throughout this period so that you can continue some drills (where it’s safe to do so) whilst completing your rehabilitation program.

Rest assured that the Hartwell Physiotherapy team will ensure you can return to your sport safely, minimising your chance of re-injury and will give you the tools and drills to compete to your best again.
